VILLANOVA, Pa.- The UConn lacrosse team downed Villanova, 12-11, in an overtime thriller behind the stellar performance of three Huskies who registered hat tricks. The Huskies continue to extend their best record in program history as Connecticut is now 9-1 overall and 2-1 in conference action, while the Wildcats fell to 5-6 (0-3 BE).
Catherine Gross led the Husky offense with four goals and her third hat trick of the 2013 campaign, while Carly Palmucci and Morgan O’Reilly each scored three goals apiece. This marks the fourth hat trick of Palmucci’s career and O’Reilly’s third of the season.
The Huskies, who were outshot 28-27 on the afternoon, went into halftime with a 6-4 advantage but the Wildcats were not backing down as they responded with seven second half goals. Connecticut trailed 11-10 when Alexandra Crofts found the back of the net with 2:20 remaining in regulation and forcing the game to overtime.
Lauren Kahn, who notched four draw controls and grabbed two ground balls, finished the contest with four points following three assists and a goal.
Kahn’s final assists came on Gross’s overtime game-winner with 30 seconds remaining in the extra time giving the Huskies a 12-11 win.
Defending the UConn net was Shannon Nee who improves to 7-1 on the season after playing the complete game and tallying nine saves.
UConn returns to Storrs on Friday for a 3 p.m. contest against Cincinnati.
