STORRS, Conn.- The University of Connecticut lacrosse team improved to 10-1 this season after recording a 15-2 victory against Cincinnati on Friday. The Huskies have won four consecutive games and now hold a 3-1 record in BIG EAST play. The Bearcats fell to 6-6 (0-4 in BIG EAST play).
For Connecticut, the two goals allowed were the fewest allowed this season, matching the total allowed in the first game of the season at Iona.
The Huskies dominated the first half, outscoring the Bearcats 11-0. Connecticut took 18 shots compared to just four from Cincinnati. The Huskies were led by junior Lauren Kahn who scored four first half goals. Senior Catherine Gross started the scoring for the Huskies, connecting on her first two shots to give UConn a 2-0 lead. Gross and Morgan O'Reilly each completed the game with three goals apiece.
In the second half, UConn owned a 4-2 goal advantage. Connecticut took 10 shots, compared to nine from the Bearcats. The Huskies were able to capitalize on 10 Bearcat turnovers.
Goalkeeper Shannon Nee (8-1) recorded two saves in the first half, including a nice stop with less than a second left in the first half. She now has 60 total saves on the season. Nee was replaced by sophomore Marya Fratoni to start the second half. Fratoni recorded four saves, while allowing both Cincinnati goals.
On the season, the Huskies have now outscored opponents 146-96. A large part of their success has been Kahn's impressive play. With her four goals today, Kahn has amassed 26 this season which leads the UConn squad. Kahn also holds a team-leading 48 points. The Huskies entered the contest with a stellar .507 shot percentage, and added to it with a .536 (15-28) percentage today.
Freshman Madalyn Pimental
scored the first goal of her career unassisted in the second half at 11:32. She added another goal at the 10:41 mark in the second half, assisted by Katherine Finkelston
The Huskies now hold a 4-0 record at the Sherman Family Complex this season. The next three games for UConn will be head at home.
The team will be back in action this Sunday April 14th when they will host BIG EAST rival Louisville at the Sherman Family Sports Complex at noon.
