STORRS, CT (March 10) Bonnie Wehinger (North Syracuse, NY) scored three goals and added an assist as the University of Connecticut womens lacrosse team downed Lafayette College, 9-5, at the George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex in Storrs on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies improved their record to 2-1, while Lafayette fell to 0-3.
The first half saw several lead changes between the Huskies and the Leopards. Lafayettes Jennifer Stone opened the scoring 2:32 into the game. The Huskies quickly recovered on two goals by Wehinger in a 1:07 time span. Lafayette evened the score at the 20:16 mark on a score from Heather McClelland, and then took the 3-2 lead five-minutes later on another McClelland score. It was the Huskies turn to tie the game at the 14:14 mark on a goal by Heather Bliss (Tully, NY). Wehingers last goal of the day gave the Huskies the one-goal advantage with 20-seconds remaining in the half.
Connecticut opened the second half scoring three unanswered goals, including the eventual game-winner. Bliss notched her second goal at the 22:07 mark, followed by two from Kariane Lauri (Memphis, NY). Lafayette made a scoring surge at the midpoint of the half with McClellands third and fourth goals of the day, but it wasnt enough to take the lead. Connecticuts Kelly Feeley (Collingswood, NJ) closed out the days scoring at the 6:43 mark.
April Pollock (North Syracuse, NY) earned her second win in two games, recording five saves.
Connecticut will travel to Yale on Wednesday, March 13 at 3:00 pm in a non-conference match-up.
