Huskies Head to Villanova Saturday

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn Huskies carry a three-game winning streak into their final road game of 2017 as they head Villanova Saturday afternoon to face the Wildcats in a BIG EAST match-up. Saturday’s game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.

The Huskies posted a pair of wins last week, taking down Marquette at home, 17-14, and going on the road for an 18-11 win at Cincinnati. Junior Grace Nolan powered the Huskies offensive attack, piling up a staggering 17 points for the Huskies. She opened the week with four goals, three assists in a 17-14 win over Marquette, followed by career bests of five goals, five assists in an 18-11 win at Cincinnati. Her 10-point outing in the win at Cincinnati tied an UConn record for points in a game that was previously set by Shannon Burke against Central Connecticut State on February 21, 2007. 

For her efforts, Nolan took home this week’s BIG EAST Attacker of the Week award, her first this season and the seventh weekly honor of her career. Nolan started last week ranked outside the top-10 in the conference for points per game and now leads the BIG EAST with a 4.86 points per contest average. She is fourth in the league with 40 goals (2.86 pg) and fifth in assists with 27 (1.93 pg).

Senior Jacqueline Jordan also had a big week, scoring nine goals with a pair of assists in the two wins. Jordan is second to Nolan with 44 points, coming on 34 goals and 10 assists. Her 34 goals and 44 points this season is a new career-high mark.

The Huskies are 8-0 all-time vs the Villanova Wildcats, 4-0 both at home and on the road. UConn won last season’s meeting with the Wildcats at home, 13-8. Kelsey Catalano scored four goals to lead the Huskies to their first BIG EAST win of the season. Katherine Finkelston, Alyson Fazio, Grace Nolan and Brooke Jensen all scored twice in the win. Senior goaltender Shannon Nee stopped eight shots, six in the second half. The Huskies held a 30-18 shot advantage and picked-up 13 grounders in the win.

Villanova enters their final home game of the season on Saturday looking to end a five-game losing streak. The Wildcats are coming off a 17-10 loss at home to No. 13 Denver last weekend. Villanova will honor their six graduating seniors before Saturday’s game. Freshman Katie Comerford earned this week’s BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after tallying a combined eight points against nationally ranked Florida and Denver.
