STORRS, Conn.- The UConn women’s lacrosse team has clinched a spot in the 2013 BIG EAST Championships as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. This marks the program’s first postseason berth. The Huskies stamped their ticket to the tournament with a 10-7 victory over No.6 Notre Dame as the team improved to 13-1 overall and 5-1 in the BIG EAST.
Connecticut jumped three spots in this week’s deBeer Women’s Poll following Sunday’s upset win over the Fighting Irish and are now No. 16 which is the Huskies’ highest ranking since 2006.
“This is something we’ve been working towards for the past three seasons and I’m so proud that this team was able to do it,” head coach Katie Woods commented. “We have a strong group of seniors who have been determined to take this team to the post season and I’m so excited for this team to have made it to our first BIG EAST tournament.”
Following a 2-0 weekend in Storrs, the Huskies solidified the program’s first undefeated home record with a perfect 7-0 mark while playing at George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do this week to prepare for our last two regular season games but this has been a program-changing season and it’s due to our leadership, work ethic and cohesion as a team,” Woods finished. “This is a very exciting time for UConn lacrosse!”
The Huskies round out the regular season this weekend when they face No. 7 Georgetown on Friday at 4 p.m. and No. 17 Loyola (Md.) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
