UConn Out In Semifinals
The No. 2 seeded UConn was knocked out of the Big East tournament in the semifinals Thursday at Cooper field after the Huskies dropped a 12-8 decision to the No. 3 seed, Temple.

The Huskies are coming off a 15-14 win at Villanova last weekend where the game literally came down to the final horn to decide the outcome. Freshman Olivia Miles (Watertown, N.Y.) buried the game-winning goal, her second on the day, just as the final horn sounded to send UConn home with their fourth-straight win. Thanks to their fourth-straight win, the Huskies have evened their BIG EAST record at 4-4 and with a win over the Owls can finish with a winning record in league play for the fifth-straight season.

Junior Grace Nolan (Marcellus, N.Y.) added to her team-leading scoring totals with five points, two goals and three assists, in the win at Villanova. Nolan has 72 points on the season to lead the conference at 4.80 ppg. Her 42 goals (2.80 pg) puts her fourth among the conference leaders. Her 72 points ranks second in the UConn record book for points in a season (100 – Shannon Burke, 2007).

Senior Jacqueline Jordan (Los Gatos, Calif.) put three goals on the board at Villanova, giving her 37 goals on the season, a career-high mark, and puts her eighth in the BIG EAST at 2.47 per game. She has 48 points on the year, also a career-high mark. Jordan is also the team’s leader in draw controls with 38 this season.

Freshman goalkeeper Grace Breshlian (Wantagh, N.Y.) closes out her rookie season having played every minute in the cage for the Huskies. Breshlian leads the league with 156 saves, averaging 10.40 saves per game.

Saturday also marks UConn Lacrosse Alumni Day as the Huskies will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the program. A halftime presentation will recognize UConn Lacrosse alumni including the founder and first coach of the program, current Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen.

Grace Nolan – 72 points (42g, 30a)
Jacqueline Jordan – 47 points (37g, 10a), 38 draw controls
Maggie Tripodi – 34 points (22g, 11a)
Cassie Ekstrom – 36 ground balls, 21 caused turnovers
Grace Beshlian – 12.76 GAA, 156 saves, .448 sv%

The all-time series is tied at 3-3 but Temple won both meetings last season including a 12-8 decision in the BIG EAST tournament semifinals. The Owls took a 5-4 lead into halftime but UConn’s Grace Nolan tied the game at 5-5 just 51 seconds into the second half. From there it was all Temple as they ran off seven-straight goals, four from Kristie Connor, while keeping the Huskies off the scoreboard until 37 seconds left in the game to move on to the title game. Connor finished the day with five goals and four draw controls while teammate Nicole Tiernan put three in the back of the net for the Owls. UConn’s Nolan and Alison Fazio each scored three times.

Record: 13-3, 6-2 Big East
Last Time Out: 4/22/17 vs. No.2 Florida, L, 15-5

The Temple Owls enter the regular season finale at 6-2 in the BIG EAST standings, having clinched a playoff spot with seeding yet to be determined. The Owls saw a six-game winning streak snapped last weekend with a 15-5 loss at the hands of the No.2 ranked Florida Gators. Temple is led offensively by senior Brenda McDermott who has 65 points on 35 goals and 30 assists this season. Classmate Morgan Glassford has 36 points (14 goals/36 assists) and is among the league leaders in draw controls with 63 on the year. She comes in averaging 4.20 per game, fifth in the league.
