STORRS, Conn. - The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced their 2017 All-Region teams on Friday and for the eighth-consecutive season the UConn Huskies were represented on the All-Northeast team. UConn juniors Grace Nolan (Marcellus, N.Y.) and Cassie Ekstrom (Sandy Hook, Conn.) were both honored with spots on this year's team.
Nolan was named to the All-Northeast First Team for the second-straight year while Ekstrom was slotted on the second team, also for the second-straight season. The Huskies now have had 34 All-Northeast selections in program history.
The IWLCA has honored 128 student-athletes in Division I with a selection to one of the All-Region teams for 2017. These student-athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-American teams, which will be announced on Wednesday, May 17. The IWLCA will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American Banquet on Saturday June 3, 2017 at the Hunt Valley Inn in Hunt Valley, Md.
Nolan, who recently became a three-time All-BIG EAST selection, led the conference in points finishing the year with 77. She guided the UConn offense with 4.89 points per-game, including 2.78 goals and 2.11 assists per outing. Her 77 points were second in the UConn record book for points in a season while she tied her goal output from last season with 44. Her 33 assists was second in the UConn record book.
Ekstrom returns to the All-Northeast team after again leading the UConn defensive unit in 2017. She finished the season leading the team in both caused turnovers, 25, and ground balls, 40. She ranked fourth among BIG EAST leaders averaging 2.50 ground balls per game. She was also among the top-10 in the BIG EAST in caused turnovers, averaging 1.60 per game.
