STORRS, Conn. – University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse head coach Katie Woods announced Thursday that seniors Alexandra Crofts (Westport, Conn.), Alyson Fazio (Methuen, Mass.), Lauren Kwasnowski (Kingston, N.Y.) and Shannon Nee (Lancaster, Pa.) will serve as captains for the 2015-16 season.
“I think they’re all very strong leaders in their own way and collectively, they make a strong captain unit,” Woods said, “I’m excited to see how their leadership will carry us through the season.”
Crofts, a midfielder, started in all 18 games last season and finished fifth on the team with 20 goals and 13 assists for a total 33 points. Her 13 assists were good for fourth best on the team and she was one of seven Huskies to record at least 20 goals. She tallied the third-most ground balls on the team with 28 and ended the season with the fourth-highest draw control total with 18.
Fazio saw action in all 18 games as a midfielder, earning 10 starts. She was one of eight Huskies to score double-digit goals (14) and she recorded a career-high nine assists last season for a total 23 points to finish eighth on the team. Her 16 ground balls ranked third among UConn midfielders.
Representing the defense, Kwasnowski served as a captain last season as a junior and played in all 18 games with 17 starts. She became the fifth Husky ever to be named an All-American after she earned a spot on the IWLCA All-America Second Team. Her 40 ground balls and 35 caused turnovers, the most of anyone on the team, earned her the title of Big East Defender of the Year. Her performance last season earned her an invite to the U.S. Women's Lacrosse National Team tryout.
Nee was the starting goalkeeper in all 18 games last season. Her .471 save percentage, the best in the league earned her Big East Goalkeeper of the Year honors and a spot on the All-Big East First Team. Her career-high 147 saves last season helped earn her a spot on the IWLCA All-Northeast First Team for the third straight year. Nee is currently one win away from the program record (32) and she also was invited to the U.S. Women's Lacrosse National Team tryout following her junior year.
The Huskies are scheduled to kick off their season on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016 at 3 p.m. when they will take on Quinnipiac at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs.
