STORRS, Conn. - Former University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse player Brittney Testa passed away on Friday morning in a tragic car accident near the Storrs campus.
Testa was a four-year player for the Huskies from 2010-13. Testa was a key member of the program and helped UConn to its first-ever NCAA tournament berth in 2013. She was the starting goalkeeper for the Huskies in 2011 and ’12 and played in a total of 36 career games with a 19-13 record as a starter. She was a trusted and valued teammate and will be deeply missed by all those who played and coached her at UConn.
“The entire University of Connecticut community and its Division of Athletics was deeply saddened by the loss of Brittney,” said UConn Director of Athletics Warde Manuel. “She was a great example of what the ideal student-athlete is – successful on the field of play, in the classroom and a positive member of the community. Brittney was a key factor in the development of our women’s lacrosse program as it made its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance last spring. We send our deepest sympathy to Brittney’s family and friends. We are also deeply touched by the messages of condolences that we have received from around the country, particularly from the lacrosse community.”
“Words can't describe the loss of a former player and teammate,” said UConn head coach Katie Woods. “This has been a very sad week for the women’s lacrosse program, but the team has stayed together and the support from the UConn and lacrosse community has been unbelievable.
“Brittney was extremely passionate about lacrosse and brought a competitive fire to the team every day. She wanted nothing more than the best for UConn lacrosse. She was one of the most loyal teammates and friends to everyone in the program. We'll miss her contagious spirit and smile that she spread to those around her. Our thoughts and prayers have been and will continue to be with Brittney's family.”
Testa was the beloved and cherished daughter of Karen Knox Testa and Glenn C. Testa of Bridgewater, Vt.; devoted granddaughter of Doris Testa and Roberta Gately of Westwood, Mass.; and the late Robert F. Gately.
She is also survived by loving cousins, Bill, Chris, Jennifer, Katie, James Jr. Knox and Danielle Baretta and several aunts, uncles and dear friends.
She was a graduate of Kimball Union Academy (Meriden, N.H.), where she was a multi-sports athlete. She also played for Revolution Lacrosse in Boston. She enjoyed life to its fullest with family and friends and will be deeply missed.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours in the Holden, Dunn & Lawler Funeral Home, 55 High Rock Street (off Route 109 West at I-95 exit 16B) in Westwood, Mass., on Tuesday, December 31st from 12:00-3:00 p.m.
A celebration of her life will be held in Woodstock, Vt., on May 24, 2014.
