Rowing Opens Season At Miami

UConn raced at Miami on Saturday.

MIAMI - The University of Connecticut women’s rowing team opened up its spring season on Saturday racing against the University of Miami as the Hurricanes won all four events.

In the novice eight, Miami won in a time of 7:45.2 to 7:55.7 and the UConn boat was freshman Marissa Minor (Lisbon, Conn.), freshman Peri Stevens (Suffield, Conn.), sophomore Stephanie Varanelli (Bethlehem, Conn.), freshman Meghan Pirsig (Glastonbury, Conn.), freshman Allysa Hopson (Windsor, Conn.), freshman Emily Wilson (Putney, Ver.), freshman Monica Dorsey (Los Angeles, Calif.), freshman Katelynn Person (North Windham, Conn.) and freshman Taylor Hammeke (Tolland, Conn.).

Miami won the varsity four race in a time of 7:45.7 compared to UConn’s 7:50.5. The Huskies’ boat was sophomore Liz Tomasco (Milford, Conn.), freshman AnnaMarie Sullivan (Hampton, N.H.), sophomore Laura Webster (Seymour, Conn.), junior Kristen Harrington (Milford, Conn.) and sophomore Christine Latona (Granby, Conn.).

The UConn second varsity eight was defeated 6:57.11 to 7:11.4 and the UConn boat was sophomore Elise McCormick (Glastonbury, Conn.), senior Melissa Soucie (Avon, Conn.), junior Erin Mounce (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), junior Ashley West (Dudley, Mass.), freshman Audrey Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.), sophomore Abbie Viner (Stratford, Conn.), freshman Emily Powers (Lyme, Conn.), sophomore Amanda Litty (Bethesda, Md.) and junior Chelsea Zabel (Guilford, Conn.).

The varsity eight race was won by Miami in 6:24.9 compared to 7:02.0 for Miami. The UConn boat was junior Charlotte Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.), junior Natalie Carlone (Fort Washington, Pa.), senior Hillary Wiles-Lafayette (Litchfield, Conn.), sophomore Kathryn Hughes (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), senior Caitlin Swallow (South Glastonbury, Conn.), junior Julia Roth (Weston, Conn.), junior Kendra Kohanski (East Lyme, Conn.), senior Brittany DePoi (Brookfield, Conn.) and senior Adrienne Barrett (West Granby, Conn.).

UConn returns to action on March 30 when it travels to the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia.
