Rowing Enjoys Success At Murphy Cup

The Second Varsity Eight advance to the Grand Final at the Murphy Cup.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Connecticut women’s rowing team competed at the Murphy Cup Regatta on Saturday in the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight.

In the Varsity Eight race, UConn finished fourth in their heat, however its time put them in the top 12 out of 22 crews and it advanced to the petite final. In the petite final, the Huskies were fourth (8:01.2) behind Temple (7:42.3), Rutgers (7:46) and Bucknell (7:53.3) and finished ahead of La Salle (8:14) and Lehigh (8:28).

That boat was sophomore Charlotte Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.), senior Diana Filipek (Sewell, N.J.), senior Kaitlyn Clarke (Tolland, Conn.), junior Hillary Wiles-Lafayette (Litchfield, Conn.), junior Adrienne Barrett (West Granby, Conn.), senior Andriel Doolittle (Clinton, Conn.), senior Mary Grace Haggett (Ledyard, Conn.), sophomore Erin Mounce (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and senior Brittany DePoi (Brookfield, Conn.).

In the Second Varsity Eight, UConn won its heat, advancing them to the grand final. The Huskies finished third (8:01) behind Navy (7:45) and St. Joesph’s (7:55) and in front of George Washington (8:09). There were 18 crews entered in this event.

Rowing for UConn in that boat was senior Brittanie Reinold (Sulton, Mass.), junior Melissa Soucie (Avon, Conn.), freshman Kathryn Hughes (Sarasota Springs, N.Y.), sophomore Natalie Carlone (Ft. Washington, Pa.), junior Caitlin Swallow (South Glastonbury, Conn.), sophomore Ashley West (Dudley, Mass.), sophomore Julia Roth (Weston, Mass.), senior Jessica Chames (Hookset, N.H.) and senior Amanda Sibley (Old Lyme, Conn.).

UConn returns to action when it races at home next Saturday against Trinity and Marist. Races will begin at 7:30 a.m. and will take place on Coventry Lake.
