The UConn women's rowing team raced at the Yankee Cup against Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire on Saturday. The conditions were very rough and cold with a strong headwind. All races took about two minutes longer than they would in normal conditions.
The UConn novice eight (freshman Liz Sarant (Massapequa, N.Y.), freshman Melissa Soucie (Avon, Conn.), sophomore Kaitlyn Clarke (Tolland, Conn.), freshman Dee Dee Cabrey (Fort Sill, Okla.), freshman Adrienne Barrett (West Granby, Conn.), sophomore Katie Visentin (Chesire, Conn.), freshman Hillary Wiles-Lafayette (Litchfield, Conn.), sophomore Carolyn Judge (Westfield, Conn.), freshman Brittany DePoi (Brookfield. Conn.)) won their event, winning with a time of 8:50.1. UMass was second (8:52.8), and URI was third (9:02.8).
The varsity eight (senior Mikey Sevick (Simsbury, Conn.), senior Katie Rauscher (Manchester, Conn.), junior Gretchen Stern (Rexford, N.Y.), senior Sarah Willhoft (Manchester, Conn.), senior Jenny Reynolds (South Hero, Vt.), senior Lizzie Littlewood (Mystic, Conn.), junior Audrey Squire (Kinnelon, N.J.), junior Kim Weber (Ridgefield, Conn.), senior Rebecca Likar (East Lyme, Conn.) ended up racing twice, as there was a protest from UMass after the first race. URI won (7:54.6), with UMass second (8:04.6), UNH third (8:20.7) and UConn fourth (8:24.1).
The junior varsity eight (senior Leah Masopust Morris, Conn.), sophomore Andriel Doolittle (Clinton, Conn.), senior Liz Harsley (Riverdale, N.J.), senior Sylvia Czupi (Woodbridge, Conn.), sophomore Amanda Sibley (Old Lyme, Conn.), sophomore Jessica Chames (Hooksett, N.H.), sophomore Mary Grace Haggett (Ledyard, Conn.), junior Morfia Efthimiou (Stonington, Conn.), sophomore Dana Haddad (Storrs, Conn.)) came in third (9:00.9), behind URI (8:16.9) and UMass (8:35.1) and in front of UNH (9:04.3).
The varsity four (sophomore Brittanie Reinold (Sutton, Mass.), sophomore Diana Filipek (Sewell, N.J.), senior Katie Beasley (Centerville, Mass.), sophomore Mary Fowler (Milford, Conn.), junior Amanda Cote (Wakefield, R.I.)) finished third (9:35.9) behind URI (9:09.1) and UMass (9:10.6).
UConn finished third overall for the Yankee Cup points trophy. URI won with 27 points, UMass was second with 23 points, UConn was third with 19 points and UNH finished fourth with 10 points.
The varsity four "B" and novice four events were cancelled due to unsafe conditions.
The Huskies race tomorrow morning at home at 7:30 a.m. against La Salle and Marist.
