PHILADELPHIA – After opening its season at the UCF Regatta last week, the University of Connecticut women’s rowing team competed at the Murphy Cup held in Philadelphia, Pa. The Huskies sent four boats to the event, led by a first-place finish from the second V8+ in the petite final.
The Husky V8+ got the action started on Saturday morning, taking second in the petite final with a time of 6:55.69. UConn’s JV8+ boat claimed first in the petite final, clocking in at 6:57.02.
The V4+ grabbed a second-place finish in their heat in a time of 8:01.88, while the JV4+ also took second in its heat in 7:41.86.
“I am very happy with how our four boats raced today,” head coach Jennifer Wendry said. “Each boat showed a lot of heart and it was a confidence boosting day. We made some improvements from our races a week ago in Florida and gained some speed. The team is looking forward to a good week of practice and will be ready for racing when we face UMass at home next Saturday.”
The V8+ boat consisted of Jun Takeda (cox), Courtney Dawless (stroke), Audrey Kelley (seven), Nikoline Laidlaw (six), Maja Barnouw (five), Sierra Mazur (four), Alyssa Hopson (three), Arielle Sherman-Golembeski (two) and Mae Hanson (bow).
The Husky second V8+ was Caroline Bemis (cox), Emily Powers (stroke), Heather Norris (seven), Laura Webster (six), Molly Bugos (five), Katie Ullinger (four), Rachel Signor (three), Katherine Wheatley (two) and Shannon Cox (bow).
The Huskies will head to Coventry, Conn. to face Massachusetts on Saturday, April 2.
