CAMDEN, N.J. - After scrimmaging against the University of Miami last week, the University of Connecticut women's rowing team opened its 2015 spring season at the Murphy Cup held in Camden, N.J. The Huskies sent three boats to the event, led by a second-place finish from the V8+ in the petite final.
The Husky V4+ got the action started on Saturday morning, taking fourth in its heat with a time of 8:38.70. UConn's JV8+ boat claimed third in its heat, clocking in at 7:28.24.
The V8+ grabbed a third-place finish in their heat (6:57.31), earning a spot in the petite final. In the petite final, Connecticut finished second with a time of 6:54.44.
The Husky V8+ boat was Elise McCormick (cox), Laura Webster (stroke), Audrey Kelley (seven), Kathryn Hughes (six), Nikoline Laidlaw (five), Christine Latona (four), Rachel Signor (three), Haley Ullinger (two) and Brenna Conrad (bow).
The Husky JV8+ was Alexandra Coults (cox), Diana Gryszkiewicz (stroke), Caitie Parsons (seven), Alyssa Hopson (six), Heather Norris (five), Katherine Lavrentios (four), Shannon Cox (three), Teresa Starzecki (two), Abbie Viner (bow).
"We saw some positive things today in our racing," said head coach Jennifer Wendry. "We talked about getting an A-plus in the things we can control; mental approach, physical effort, and boat chemistry. They executed that and I am proud of their efforts. I am excited for the next two weeks of training leading into the Knecht cup where we will see many of the same crews again."
