    NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The University of Connecticut women's rowing team defeated UMass in the varsity eight and novice eight boats in racing on Wednesday morning.

    The UConn varsity eight posted a time of 6:14.37 while UMass was 6:17.94. The UConn boat was junior Charlotte Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.), junior Natalie Carlone (Fort Washington, Pa.), senior Hillary Wiles-Lafayette (Litchfield, Conn.), sophomore Kathryn Hughes (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), senior Caitlin Swallow (South Glastonbury, Conn.), junior Julia Roth (Weston, Conn.), junior Kendra Kohanski (East Lyme, Conn.), senior Brittany DePoi (Brookfield, Conn.) and senior Adrienne Barrett (West Granby, Conn.).

    The novice eight race was won by UConn in 6:42.38 while UMass was 6:44.59. Rowing for UConn was freshman Marissa Minor (Lisbon, Conn.), freshman AnnaMarie Sullivan (Hampton, N.H.), sophomore Stephanie Varanelli (Bethlehem, Conn), junior Kristen Harrington (Milford, Conn.), sophomore Christine Latona (Granby, Conn.), freshman Megan Duva (Glastonbury, Conn.), freshman Alyssa Hopson (Windsor, Conn.), freshman Brittany Shakley (Litchfield, Conn.) and freshman Meghan Pirsig (Glastonbury, Conn).

     

     

    The UMass second varsity eight boat won that race in 6:23.31 while UConn came in at 6:36.49. That UConn boat was sophomore Elise McCormick (Glastonbury, Conn.), senior Melissa Soucie (Avon, Conn.), freshman Audrey Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.), junior Ashley West (Dudley, Mass.), sophomore Laura Webster (Seymour, Conn.), sophomore Abbie Viner (Stratford, Conn.), freshman Emily Powers (Lyme, Conn.), sophomore Amanda Litty (Bethesda, Md.) and junior Chelsea Zabel (Guilford, Conn.).

    In the varsity four race, UConn was second in 7:01.66 while UMass A was 6:55.12 and UMass B was third in 7:02.72. The UConn boat was Liz Tomasco (Milford, Conn.), sophomore Doe Bajguz (Naugatuck, Conn.), sophomore Teresa Starzecki (Shelton, Conn.), senior Amber Crispino (Marion, Conn.) and junior Abigail Lowry (Groton, Conn.).

    In the second varsity four, UMass was 7:11.37 while UConn was 7:28.04. Rowing for UConn were junior Emi Nishino (Holden, Mass.), sophomore Jessica Berner (East Hartford, Conn.), senior EJ Joseph (Bridgeport, Conn.), senior Tess Cournoyer (Warwick, R.I.) and sophomore Grace Cournoyer (Warwick, R.I.).

    In the second novice eight race, UMass was 6:38.0 while UConn was 6:44.0. Rowing for UConn was freshman Alexandra Coults (Beverly, Mass.), freshman Peri Stevens (Suffield, Conn.), senior Mara Gauger (Winsted, Conn.), freshman Emily Wilson (Putney, Vt.), freshman Taylor Hammeke (Tolland, Conn.), freshman Katelynn Person (North Windham, Conn.), freshman Mikayla Hudson (Windsor, Conn.), freshman Kimberley Gillen (Mahwah, N.J.) and freshman Meghan Lally (Jefferson, Mass.).

    The Huskies return to action on Sunday when they travel to Worcester, Mass., to take on Holy Cross and Boston College.
