Rowing's Novice Eight Wins Dad Vail Gold

The UConn novice eight won the gold medal at the Dad Vail Regatta.

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Connecticut novice eight boat won the gold medal at the Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday as the Husky rowing team concluded its season.

The UConn novice eight won its final in a time of 6:58.656 and defeated Buffalo, St. Joseph's (Pa.), Grand Valley, Delaware and Purdue. Earlier in the day, it won a semifinal race in 6:50.294 over Delaware, Fordham, Drexel and Lafayette.

The novice eight boat was freshman Liz Sarant (Massapequa, N.Y.), freshman Melissa Soucie (Avon, Conn.), sophomore Kaitlyn Clarke (Tolland, Conn.), freshman DeeDee Cabrey (Fort Sill, Okla.), freshman Adrienne Barrett (West Granby, Conn.), sophomore Katie Visentin (Cheshire, Conn.), freshman Hillary Wiles-Lafayette (Litchfield, Conn.), sophomore Carolyn Judge (Weston, Conn.) and freshman Brittany DePoi (Brookfield, Conn.).

The UConn novice four was the other boat on the day that advanced to a final. UConn was second in its semifinal behind Army in a time of 7:48.319. In the final, UConn was sixth in 8:17.096 as Fairfield won the title. That boat was freshman Mandy Collins (Harrisville, R.I.), freshman Kelly Macko (Bolton, Mass.), sophomore Meredith Malinn (Norwood, Mass.), freshman Mara Gauger (Winsted, Conn.) and freshman Jess Motta (Norwood, Mass.).

The UConn varsity eight finished fifth in its semifinal head. The varsity eight boat was comprised of senior Michael-Ann Sevick (Simsbury, Conn.), senior Katie Rauscher (Manchester, Conn.), senior Lizzie Littlewood (Mystic, Conn.), junior Audrey Squire (Kinnelon, N.J.), senior Sarah Willhoft (Manchester, Conn.), junior Gretchen Stern (Rexford, N.Y.), junior Kim Weber (Ridgefield, Conn.), senior Jenny Reynolds (South Hero, Vt.), junior Morfia Efthimiou (Stonington, Conn.).

The junior varsity eight was sixth in its semifinal heat. That boat was made up of senior Leah Masopust (Morris, Conn.), senior Rebecca Likar (East Lyme, Conn.), senior Kristen Beasley (Centerville, Mass.), senior Liz Harlsey (Riverdale, N.Y.), senior Sylvia Czupi (Woodbridge, Conn.), sophomore Andriel Doolittle (Clinton, Conn.), freshman Amanda Sibley (Old Lyme, Conn.), sophomore Diana Filipek (Sewell, N.J.) and sophomore Dana Haddad (Storrs, Conn.).

The UConn varsity four was fourth in its semifinal heat. That boat is sophomore Brittany Reinold (Sutton, Mass.), sophomore Jess Chames (Hookset, N.H), sophomore Mary Grace Haggett (Ledyard, Conn.), sophomore Mary Fowler (Milford, Conn.) and junior Amanda Cote (Wakefield, Conn.).
