SARASOTA, Fla. –
The UConn rowing team finished in fifth-place in the American Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday at Nathan Benderson Park, all while earning a silver medal in the Third Varsity 8+ and a bronze medal in the Second Varsity 8+.

The Huskies completed their spring season with a strong showing against their six conference opponents, recording 118 points in six races – just one point behind Sacramento State and San Diego State (119).

UCF (217) took first in each race, repeating as the conference champion by besting Tulsa, which finished in second (189). Temple (90) and SMU (87) brought up the rear on Saturday.

"I am very proud of this team for their effort and accomplishments this season," said head coach Jennifer Wendry. "Each boat approached the unfavorable wind conditions today with a strong mental approach. It was very competitive racing across the board today."

In addition to the pair of top-three finishes, the Huskies had two rowers earn honors, as sophomore Maja Barnouw was selected to the All-Conference First Team and freshman Emily Woodrow earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team.

The Third Varsity 8+ finished just 2.14 seconds behind UCF in a closely-contested race, while the Second Varsity 8+ was merely 1.1 seconds behind Tulsa for second-place.

The Second Varsity 4+ and Third Varsity 4+ both placed fourth, while the Varsity 4+ - a bronze medal boat last year – took fifth. UConn finished sixth in the Varsity 8+, the final race of the day.

"The whole team was very proud to see the Second Varsity 8+ and Third Varsity 8+ medal, as the individual boat accomplishments represent the work of the entire team," said Wendry. "In fifth place as a team, we were only two points away from finishing third."

UConn enjoyed its best finish in the AAC Championship since 2014, completing the 2017 season on a high note against its conference opponents.

"I really enjoyed the journey from start to finish with this group this year; they are exceptional young women," said Wendry.
