HARTFORD, Conn. – The UConn rowing team competed at the 19th annual Head of the Riverfront Regatta on Sunday, as the Open 8+ ‘B’ led the Huskies with a second-place finish on the Connecticut River.
In the first competition of the fall season, the Huskies recorded five top-10 finishes in the six boats that raced – including a pair of top-five places. The Open 8+ ‘B’ timed at 15:55.87, 12 seconds behind Wesleyan’s first-place boat.
“It was a beautiful day with great conditions at the Head of the Riverfront,” said 21-year head coach Jennifer Wendry. “Our boats felt that they raced hard and had good pieces.”
Wendry added, “With few opportunities to compete in the fall, the best takeaway from today is to work on practicing with the same effort that is put in on race day. It is a great thing for us to begin to conquer as we prepare for the Head of the Charles (Oct. 21-22).”
UConn ‘A’ was shortly behind the UConn ‘B’, placing fourth in the Open 8+ in a time of 15:59.67. The UConn ‘C’ boat finished in eighth, while UConn ‘D’ placed 11th.
In the Open 4+, both UConn boats earned top-10 finishes – including a sixth-place finish by UConn ‘A’ in 19:55.30.
The Huskies compete again in three weeks at the Head of the Charles in Boston, Mass. on Oct. 21-22. Since 1965, the Head of the Charles has welcomed the world’s best crew teams for a two-day rowing competition.
