BOSTON, Mass. –
The UConn rowing team, led by 21-year head coach Jennifer Wendry, competed in the prestigious 53rd annual Head of the Charles Regatta this weekend on the Charles River – racing four boats between Saturday and Sunday’s competition.

Against some of the best rowing teams in the country, the Huskies earned a weekend-best 10th place finish in the Women’s Club Fours on Saturday afternoon – recording a time of 18:58.059 and securing a guaranteed spot in that race again next year.

Later that afternoon, UConn picked up 14th place in the Women’s Club Eights, also securing a spot in that race for the 54th edition of Head of the Charles. The Huskies finished in 17:29.073, just 17 seconds away from a top-10 finish.

“Our results on Saturday were promising, as the boats raced hard and earned the guaranteed entries for next year, which was one of our goals going into the weekend,” said Wendry.

On Sunday, the Huskies placed 16th in the Women’s Championship Fours and 36th in the Women’s Championship Eights.

“Today our boats had a strong row relative to practices this week, but struggled to compete with the huge amount of talent in the Championship Eight category,” said Wendry.

Some of those top rowing teams included Radcliffe, Yale and Penn out of the Ivy League, as well as Alabama, Syracuse and Stanford. The Huskies held their own both days on the Charles River, earning a return trip in 2018.

In 2016, UConn raced just one boat – the Women’s Club Four – which took home sixth place out of 59 teams. Next year, the Huskies are guaranteed at least two boats to compete, including the Women’s Club Four.
