PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The UConn rowing program recorded three top-five finishes at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta on Saturday, capping-off the fall season with a strong performance from its four competing boats.
The Huskies took part in the 47th edition of the regatta on the Schuylkill River, a location regarded as the home of American rowing. Head coach Jennifer Wendry’s team competed for the second straight week, following the Head of the Charles on Oct. 21-22.
The Women’s Championship Eight placed second on Saturday, recording UConn’s best finish of the day. Its time of 15:12.435 was just eight seconds behind Penn, the gold medal finishers.
In addition, the Women’s College Frosh/Novice Eight ‘A’ earned a bronze medal with a time of 16:24.378 – while the ‘B’ took 14th in 18:35.436. The Women’s Club Championship Eight finished fourth at 15:53.910.
“We had a great finish to the fall season at the Head of the Schuylkill,” said Wendry. “This fall we have emphasized effort in practice, fitness and strength and it paid off on Saturday.”
Wendry added, “The Varsity 8+ looked very strong and aggressive coming down the course and the results showed; it was their most solid performance of the fall. Our other three eights also had solid performances. Today’s results will give us momentum going into the next phase of our training. I am very happy with our performance.”
It is the second straight season that UConn has garnered three top-five finishes at the Schuylkill, including a second-place finish. In 2016, the Women’s College/Frosh Novice Eight earned a silver medal.
