COVENTRY, CT (March 27) -- The UConn womens rowing team swept Fairfield University on Coventry Lake to open the Spring 2004 season on Saturday morning.
The Varsity Eight kicked off the day with a solid win, defeating the stags by a boat length of open water. Fairfield did not have a JV Eight so the UConn JV Eight fought it out with the two varsity crews and finished third. The UConn Varsity Four raced two Fairfield fours and had a substantial win. UConns two Novice Eights showed good speed and posted the largest wins of the day.
It was great to see the UConn crews walk away with so many wins today. It was a confidence builder for the athletes and overall just fun racing to watch, UConn head coach Jen Sanford Wendry said. I hope the JV Eight will step up tomorrow at the Yankee Cup when they race other JV Eight crews. It was tough for them to be put in the Varsity Eight race, but I think it was a learning experience and hopefully they will go into tomorrows race better prepared.
