Rowing Races At Rutgers



    NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (April 21, 2006) – The University of Connecticut women’s rowing team competed against Rutgers on Saturday afternoon.  The two teams raced in four events on the Raritan River.

    In the Varsity 8, UConn kept it close against the nationally ranked Scarlet Knight squad.  The Husky boat, consisting of Gabbey LaChance (Mystic, Conn.), Alison Elmo (Highland Mills, N.Y.), Christina Cotter (West Seneca, N.Y.), Katie Devonshuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.), Nicole Rapp (Mansfield, Conn.), Kali Garges (Queche, Vt.), Stephanie Chivers (Dalton, Mass.), Erin Bartie (Westport, Conn.) and Kerri Mocko (Stafford Springs, Conn.), finished in a close second behind Rutgers with a time 7:29.6.  Rutgers took first at 7:23.8.

    UConn’s Junior Varsity 8 boat took second in its race with a time of 7:58.6.  Rutgers finished in first place with a time of 7:46.1.  The Husky boat of Katie Beasley (Centerville, Mass.), Caitlin Meisinger (Bristol, Conn.), Brooke Grauer (Fairfield, Conn.), Olga Solovyova (New London, Conn.), Erin Andersen (Barrington, R.I.), Kelly McGary (Lewisville, N.C.), Monica Parker (Glastonbury, Conn.), Valerie Voorhees (Liverpool, N.Y.) and Arielle Shiely (Clinton, Conn.) took an early lead in the race, but the nationally-ranked JV Scarlet Knight boat pulled away with 800 meters to go to win the race.

    The third Varisty 8 boat took second place behind Rutgers with a time of 8:00.7.  The Scarlet Knights took first as they finished in 7:45.9. 

    The Novice 8, consisting of Kristan Joubert (Wappinger, N.Y.), Kellyn Mahan (Danielson, Conn.), Stephanie Bryant (Natick, Mass.), Ginny Winslow (Bozrah, Conn.), Jen Seder (Danbury, Conn.), Sarah Fennell (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Molly Berry (Acton, Mass.), Lauren DeMarco (Queensbury, N.Y.) and Kelly Dwyer (Brewster, N.Y.) finished in second with a race time of 8:23.4.

    UConn next competes at Holy Cross at 4:00 p.m.
