Five Huskies Named CRCA Scholar-Athletes

June 8, 2017

STORRS, Conn. –
Five members of the UConn rowing team were named scholar-athletes for their athletic and academic efforts in the 2017 season by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) on Thursday afternoon.

Senior Arielle Sherman-Golembeski, juniors Kathryn Stevens and Jun Takeda, and sophomores Molly Bugos and Micaela Nowacki each earned the honor after matching the qualifications of a 3.5 cumulative GPA through the most recent school year.

Student-athletes, as well as being in good academic standing, must compete in at least 75-percent of the team’s spring races and be in there second, third, or fourth year of eligibility.

After the 2016 season, former rowing team member Shannon Cox was the only Husky on the CRCA scholar-athlete list. A year later, UConn has five students being recognized for their outstanding work, both on and off the water.

72 schools were represented in the CRCA scholar-athlete recognition, including all seven AAC rowing programs (UConn, UCF, SMU, Temple, Tulsa, Sacramento State and San Diego State).

The Huskies ended their season with a fifth-place finish at the American Athletic Conference Championship in Sarasota, Fla. The Third Varsity 8+ earned a silver medal, while the Second Varsity 8+ - led by Nowacki and Takeda – took home bronze.
