STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut women’s rowing team has selected seniors Alyssa Hopson and Audrey Kelley as team captains for the 2015-16 season, as announced by head coach Jennifer Wendry on Tuesday.
“I am very pleased with the team selection, although our entire senior class is a strong group that shows great leadership on a daily basis,” Wendry said. “Alyssa and Audrey will set the bar high for the team in this role and the coaching staff is looking forward to working with them throughout the year as captains.”
Hopson enters her fourth season on the team and will be rowing from the six seat in the first varsity eight.
“Being named team captain is a complete honor to me,” said Hopson. “To be seen as a leader by my teammates is such an amazing feeling and I couldn't be more excited to be seen as a role model to my team. The team has proven that we are confident in our training and has set goals we are ready to work at and conquer. We have the fitness, the mentality and the heart to excel. With the right goals and diligence, our team will be a strong competitor and I am beyond excited for what we can do this season.”
Kelley earns the honor after competing as stroke of the first varsity eight.
“Being named team captain is certainly very humbling,” Kelley said. “I appreciate being recognized as someone my fellow teammates see as a leader and are willing to have represent the team on campus. I hope I can bring a new focus to the team as we continue to build the program and improve results. I want to help build the team to the next level of performance we know we have to potential to reach.”
The new captains will lead the Huskies out on the water at the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta in Boston, Mass. on Oct. 17 & 18.
