MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (Oct. 12, 2008) --- The University of Connecticut women’s rowing team competed at the Head of the Connecticut on Sunday as the Huskies entered three eights and competed against Wesleyan and Fredericton (Canada).
UConn's varsity eight and the Wesleyan eight raced the course in the fastest times, however both received one minute penalties for buoy violations at the start of the race and ended up officially finishing third and fifth. With 30 strokes to go in the race, UConn's third varsity eight hit a series of power boat wakes on the course and the result was that its raw time was approximately 30 seconds slower than what it would have been without the wakes.
Rowing for UConn in the varsity eight was sophomore Gretchen Stern (Rexford, N.Y.), sophomore Kim Weber (Ridgefield, Conn.), senior Kathy Les (South Windsor, Conn.), junior Sarah Willhoft (Manchester, Conn.), junior Rebecca Likar (East Lyme, Conn.), junior Katie Rauscher (Manchester, Conn.), sophomore Morfia Efthimiou (Stonington, Conn.), Diana Filipek and sophomore Katelyn Donovan (Sherman, Conn.).
