Rowing Concludes Fall Season At Syracuse Invitational

LIVERPOOL, N.Y. (Nov. 1, 2008) – The University of Connecticut rowing team concluded its fall season on Saturday as it competed at the Syracuse Invitational along with Syracuse, Buffalo, Cornell, Colgate, Rochester and Marist. The event allowed head coach Jennifer Sanford-Wendry to use many novice rowers in their first racing opportunity.

The first race of the day was the varsity four A flight, which consisted of the varsity eight split into fours. The novice eights followed, then the UConn second varsity eight and varsity four raced in fours in the varsity four B flight.  The final race of the day was the varsity eights, which included UConn's first and second varsity eight.

The UConn first varsity eight had the best performance of the day for the Huskies, finishing fourth out of 12 crews. Syracuse won with a time of 17:54.9, followed by Buffalo (18:29.8), then Syracuse B (18:41.4). UConn came in at 18:43.3, while the UConn second varsity finished tenth (20:02.4).

The varsity eight boat for UConn was sophomore Gretchen Stern (Rexford, N.Y.), sophomore Kim Weber (Ridgefield, Conn.), senior Kathy Les (South Windsor, Conn.), junior Sarah Willhoft (Manchester, Conn.), junior Rebecca Likar (East Lyme, Conn.), junior Katie Rauscher (Manchester, Conn.), sophomore Morfia Efthimiou (Stonington, Conn.), freshman Diana Filipek (Sewell, N.J.) and sophomore Katelyn Donovan (Sherman, Conn.).

Rowing for UConn in the second varsity eight was sophomore Taylor Hoige (Baldwinsville N.Y.), junior Kristen Beasley (Centerville, Mass.), sophomore Audrey Squire (Kinnelon, N.J.), junior Sylvia Czupi (Woodbridge, Conn.), junior Liz Harsley (Riverdale, N.J.), junior Julie Konstantino (Orange, Conn.), junior Charisse Laughery (Columbia, Conn.), sophomore Amanda Cote (Wakefield, R.I.) and junior Leah Masopust (Morris, Conn.).

In the novice eight event, UConn finished seventh and tenth out of 12 crews. Syracuse won in 18:23.2 while UConn's A boat came in at 20:47.1 and UConn B was 21:21.2.

The UConn first novice eight was freshman Sara Trevisani (Duxbury, Mass.), freshman Jessica Chames (Hookset, N.H.), freshman Mary Grace Haggett (Ledyard, Conn.), freshman Rosie Edreira (Newburgh, N.Y.), sophomore Diana Ramirez (El Monte, Calif.), freshman Jenn Carpenter (Old Lyme, Conn.), freshman Dana Haddad (Storrs, Conn.), sophomore Beth Flatley (Townsend, Mass.) and freshman Amanda Sibley (Old Lyme, Conn).

The UConn second novice eight was freshman Brittanie Reinold (Sulton, Mass.), freshman Liz Nissen (West Simsbury, Conn.), freshman Meredith Kaiser (Rochester, N.Y.), freshman Anna Nash (Mercer Island, Wash.), freshman Amanda White (Guilford, Conn.), junior Jenn Callahan (Bronxville, N.Y.), freshman Kylie Angell (Trumbull, Conn.), junior Kate Siracusa (Storrs, Conn.) and freshman Gretchen Pfisterer (Mystic, Conn.).

In the varsity four A flight, UConn finished 12th and 15th. In the varsity four B flight, UConn finished 11th, 13th, and 14th.

The UConn varsity four A boat was Donovan, Stern, Willhoft, Les and Rauscher. The UConn varsith four B boat was junior Mikey Sevick (Simsbury, Conn), Likar, Weber, Efthimiou and Filipek. The Varsity four C boat was sophomore Brittany Koether (Orange, Conn.), Hoige, Czupi, Konstantino and Cote. The varsity four D boat was Masopust, Laughery, Harsley, Squire and Beasley. The varsity four E boat was Sevick, junior Jackie Ortuso (Somerset, N.J.), sophomore Taylor Pence (Vienna, Va.), sophomore Brittany Weiss (New Milford, Conn.) and sophomore Hailey Rosa (Mansfield, Conn.).
