The 2017-18 UConn athletics season kicked off Friday night as the women's soccer team played host to Boston College in an exhibition game at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. The Eagles posted a 4-0 win in the game, which was one of two preseason contests for the Huskies.
The Eagles outshot the Huskies by a 18-8 count and held a 5-2 corner kick advantage.
Boston College scored the only goal of the first half took on a goal by junior Elysa Virella at 13:49 on a 16-yard shot to the near post. The Eagles held a 7-5 shot advantage and 3-0 on corner kicks in the first half.
The Eagles scored three goals in the second half in a span of 11:26. Redshirt senor Lauren Berman scored at 55:40 while Gianna Mitchell made it 3-0 Eagles at 64:40 on a scramble in front of the net. Sophomore Jenna Bike scored the final BC goal with 22:56 to play.
UConn's best chance to score came with 18:11 to play as junior Vivien Beil (Jena, Germany) curled the ball right to left past the far post from 15 yards out. Senior Sabrina Toole (Westport, Conn.) also missed a penalty shot with 5:10 left to play.
UConn plays the Boston Breakers Reserves on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the final exhibition game before the season begins.
The Boston Breakers Reserves won the 2016 Women's Premier Soccer League Championship. They feature some of the top, recently graduated collegiate talent in the nation as well as established players with semi-professional and professional experience.
