Women's Soccer Defeats LIU, 2-1, in Exhibition

Ruutu records winning goal against LIU

Aug. 12, 2012

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer squad welcomed LIU-Brooklyn to Storrs on Sunday afternoon for the Huskies only exhibition match of the 2012 preseason after Friday's Northeastern contest was cancelled due to inclement weather. Connecticut was stellar the entire game ending the afternoon with a 2-1 victory as seniors Linda Ruutu (Espoo, Finland) and Danielle Schulmann (Saddle River, N.J.) found the back of the net.

UConn had an impressive first showing at Morrone Stadium controlling possession the majority of the contest as the Huskies outshot the Blackbirds 15-3 en route to the 2-1 win. Several Huskies took their aim at the LIU keeper, including freshman forward Sam McGuire (Fishkill, N.Y.) who took two shots on goal in her first collegiate contest.

Ruutu put the Huskies on the scoreboard following a penalty kick from the top of the box and sent the ball sailing past the LIU defenders and goalkeeper to give UConn a 1-0 lead in the first half at 3:07.

Schulmann then pushed the Connecticut lead to 2-0 at 38:50 in the second half after maneuvering past a group of Blackbird defenders and rifling the ball in the goal from 10 yards out.

LIU, only taking three shots the entire game, dotted the board on an impressive shot from deep left side of the field that leaping freshman keeper Allison Saucier (Rocky Hill, Conn.) was unable to reach. The 21:13 goal set the score at a Connecticut advantage of 2-1. Saucier tallied one save and allowed one goal in her debut in the Husky jersey.

The Huskies will host their regular season opener against No. 6 UCLA on Friday, August 17 at Morrone Stadium at 7 p.m.
