Women's Soccer Shows Improvement

Aug. 13, 2017

STORRS, Conn. - Forward Hayley Dowd scored a breakaway goal from eight yards out with six seconds to play to lift the Boston Breakers Reserves to a 2-1 women’s soccer victory over UConn on Sunday at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. The game was the second of two exhibition matches for the Huskies in the preseason.

The game was tied at 1-1 at halftime and the Huskies had numerous scoring chances in the second half, particularly in the final ten minutes when they effectively attacked the Breaker defense.

The two closest chances came with 3:12 left to play when senior forward Tanya Altrui (Branford, Conn.) came charging down the left side and missed her shot; and with 2:28 to go when freshman forward Zoe Steck (Nutley, N.J.) took a cross from sophomore forward Kristen Vinciguerra (Saddle River, N.J.) in front of the net and Breaker goalie Anna Sieloff made the save.

UConn outshot the Breakers for the game 17-14 and Boston held a 7-0 corner kicks advantage.

Former Husky Riley Houle opened the game’s scoring with an unassisted goal at 18:21 on a chip in in front of the net to make it 1-0 Breakers. Houle played for the Huskies from 2011-14 and was a first team all-conference and all-region pick during her career. Houle is a native of Columbia, Conn., and played at nearby Windham High School.

The Huskies tied the game at 43:11 on a header by Steck off a free kick from freshman Melina Couzis (Baldwin Place, N.Y.), who picked up the assist.

UConn held a 7-4 shots advantage in the first half while the Breakers had a 3-0 corner kick advantage.

The Breakers also featured former Huskies Annie Wickett and Gianna Roma. Roma also played for the Huskies from 2011-14 while Wickett was at UConn in 2014-15.

The Huskies open the regular season on Monday, Aug. 21 when they travel to Syracuse for a 6 p.m. game. The home opener comes on Friday, Aug. 25 when the Huskies play host to Yale at 3 p.m.
