STORRS, Conn. -- Two goals from redshirt-junior Stephanie Ribeiro (Pawtucket, R.I.) helped lead the Huskies to a 4-0 victory over the University of Montreal. Ribeiro recorded five points for the Huskies, tallying two goals and one assist.
UConn took a 1-0 lead after Stephanie Ribeiro put one in the back of net in the in the 31st minute off a bounce right in front of the Montreal goal.Ten minutes later, UConn had a goal called off after the Huskies were called offsides.UConn went into half-time with a 1-0 lead.
A corner kick from Ribeiro in the 56th minute helped initiate UConn's second goal when senior Samantha McGuire (Fishkill, N.Y.) headed the ball into the back of the cage.Ribeiro struck again in the 79th minute. Freshman Kim Urbanek (Lonnerstadt, Germany) tore past Montreal's defense and then crossed it to wide-open Ribeiro who came running just inside the box on the right hand side to push the ball past Montreal keeper, Josianne Nantelle.
The Huskies maintained a 3-0 lead as the clock ran down when Kim Urbanek notched the fourth and final goal for UConn. Urbanek received a pass from sophomore Tanya Altrui (Branford, Conn.) who lofted the ball into the back of the net from outside the box. Urbanek totalled three points for UConn with one goal and one assist.
UConn goalkeepers junior Emily Armstrong (Collegeville, Pa.) and senior Allison Saucier (Rocky Hill, Conn.) split time, both recording 45 minutes played and three saves each. Montreal net minder Josianne Nantelle played all 90 minutes and recorded 4 saves. UConn outshot Montreal 22-9.
The Huskies will return to Joseph J. Morrone Stadium next Friday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. for their first regular season game and home opener against the Colgate Raiders.
