STORRS, Conn. - A second-half goal from junior Samantha McGuire and another in extra time from freshman Brittany Moreau paced the UConn women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Northeastern in an exhibition contest on Saturday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. The contest was UConn's final tune-up before they open the 2014 season on Aug. 22.
McGuire (Fishkill, N.Y.) put the Huskies on top in the 53rd minute, before Moreau (Belchertown, Mass.) added an insurance goal in the 110th in a pre-determined overtime period. Emily Armstrong (Collegeville, Pa.) and Allison Saucier (Rocky Hill, Conn.) combined to make three saves and pick up the clean sheet for UConn, as the Blue and White out-shot the Red and Black 15-8 overall.
Connecticut had two strong chances in the 15th minute, both generated by Riley Houle (Columbia, Conn.). The first was a blast from Houle inside the box that was saved by NU's Paige Burnett, before she served the ensuing corner kick to the head of Gabrielle Charno (Seaford, N.Y.) for a chance also saved by Burnett.
UConn broke through in the 53rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Liana Hinds (Hartford, Conn.) started the play when she sent a long pass from the wing to McGuire pushing forward. Maguire calmly ranged into the box and deposited a shot into the lower left corner of the cage.
Saucier, who replaced Armstrong in net at halftime, made her presence known in the 64th minute. After saving a Kayla Cappuzzo shot from point-blank range, she recovered to smother a rebound attempt from Lahaina Zoller and preserve the lead.
Despite UConn's 1-0 lead, the teams played a pair of mutually agreed upon overtime periods at the conclusion of regulation. Moreau was able to connect and stretch the lead in the 110th minute, gathering a loose ball in the box and blasting home her first goal as a Husky.
UConn opens the 2014 regular season on Friday, Aug. 22 when it hosts Hofstra at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
