SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The 2017-18 UConn athletic year kicked off Monday night as the women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Syracuse. The Huskies are 0-0-1 on the season while the Orange are 1-0-1.
After a scoreless first half, the Orange opened the scoring on a goal by Alex Lamontagne, who scored off her own rebound at the 74:51 mark.
It did not take long for the Huskies to get the equalizer as freshman forward Zoe Steck (Nutley, N.J) took a pass from senior Tanya Altrui (Branford, Conn.) and scored from the left side of the box at 78:48. Altrui picked up an assist on the play.
The teams played two ten-minute periods of scoreless overtime before settling for the draw. The Huskies had a pair of chances in the first overtime off of a pair of corner kicks. On the first corner kick at 96:01, Sabrina Toole (Westport, Conn.) and Steck each had a chance inside the six but had both their shots knocked away. Moments later, junior Kim Urbanek sent another corner into the box and sophomore Kristen Vinciguerra (Saddle Ridge, N.J.) had an opportunity but pushed her shot high.
At the end of of the first overtime, Steck had another chance but her shot attempt was blocked with eight seconds left. Steck, led the Huskies with five shots on the night and her last one came with four minutes remaining in the second overtime, a header that was sent high.
Junior Vivien Beil (Jena, Germany) registered a shot that went high in the final minute of the game.
The Huskies outshot Syracuse by an 18-11 mark and held a 7-2 corner kick advantage. Redshirt freshman Mollie Kerrigan (Fairfield, Conn.) had seven saves in goal for the Huskies while Courtney Brosnan had nine for Syracuse.
UConn returns to action for its home opener on Friday when it takes on Yale at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium at 3 p.m. The game will be followed by the season-opener for the men's soccer team as it takes on Iona at 7 p.m.
