STORRS, Conn. - The No. 18 UConn women's soccer team (5-1) finished with two wins this weekend after defeating Central Connecticut State (0-6) 2-1 Sunday at Morrone Stadium.
UConn got off to another early 1-0 lead when senior Rachel Hill (Rollinsford, N.H.) blew past the CCSU defense and knocked it into the lower left corner of the goal in the sixth minute of the game. Ribeiro took credit for the assist.
The Huskies maintained their 1-0 leading going into halftime, despite outshooting the Blue Devils 11-1 in the first frame. Junior Danielle Gottwik (New Port Richey, Fla.) had a nice shot in the 13th minute, followed up by another from Hill in the 18th minute, but both were saved Central's keeper.
Coming out of halftime, UConn extended its lead to 2-0 when Stephanie Ribeiro (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored her fourth goal of the season, which eventually became her fourth game-winner of the season as well.
Senior Toriana Patterson (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) played the ball up to junior Tanya Altrui (Branford, Conn.) who sent the ball into the box where Ribeiro knocked it out of the air directly into the net.
It appeared UConn could take a three-goal lead when freshman Regan Schiappa (Bedford, N.H.) put up a nice shot on goal that just barely skimmed over the crossbar and the scored remained 2-0.
Central Connecticut got on the board in the 84th minute, taking away the shutout for the Huskies, but with not enough time for the Blue Devils to even the score.
The Huskies will head down to the sunshine state to face No. 1 Florida State on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Seminole Soccer Complex in Tallahassee.
