NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Danielle Schulmann was spectacular on Sunday afternoon at Central Connecticut leading Connecticut to a 4-1 victory with three goals and an assist. The senior forward is leading the 4-2-1 Huskies for the second consecutive year as she currently has 20 points on team-highs seven points and six assists. CCSU falls to 1-4 on the season following Sunday’s loss.
UConn jumped on the scoreboard early with Schulmann scoring her first goal of the game at 6:07 to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage. The Saddle River, N.J. native drew the CCSU keeper out and sailed the ball into the open net.
Connecticut’s second goal came at 10:22 on a header by junior midfielder Jennifer Skogerboe (Leesburg, Va.) into the left corner of the net. Schulmann was credited with the assist after crossing the ball from the right side of the field.
Trailing 2-0, the hosting Blue Devils scored in the second half to avoid the shutout. Claire Walsh took the shot from the left side of the box off of a pass from Kerriann Welch.
Schulmann, registering a point in her third consecutive game, added two more goals in the second half to set the final score at 4-1. Schulmann’s third goal was scored at 63:36 with freshmen Stephanie Ribeiro (Pawtucket, R.I.) registering her third assist of the year. The final goal at 76:18 was unassisted when Schulmann grabbed a deflected ball and drilled it into the goal.
Freshmen keeper Allison Saucier (Rock Hill, Conn.) improved to 4-2-1 on the season, while CCSU’s Nikola Deiter fell to 1-4.
UConn will open up conference action on Thursday, September 13 at Syracuse at 7 p.m. The Huskies will then continue their five-game road stint and head to St. John’s on Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest.
