STORRS, Conn. (September 19, 2008) – The University of Connecticut women’s soccer team defeated Providence, 1-0 in their first BIG EAST match of the year. Annie Yi scored at 86:22 to give UConn the lead and their first win in four games.
In the 23rd minute of the game, UConn had a few opportunities to score a goal. Redshirt sophomore Ashley O’Brien (Broad Brook, Conn.) attempted three corner kicks in the matter of a minute. After the third corner, O’Brien took a shot herself but it was able to be saved by Providence goalie Jill Schott.
Despite a lot of offense by both teams, the score remained at halftime 0-0.
Freshman Melissa Busque (St. Bruno, Quebec) had three chances during the 53rd minute of the game to score. The first shot Busque took, Schott stuck her leg out for the save. Busque regained control of the ball and took another quick shot but a Providence defender was there for the save. On Busque’s third shot the goalie fell on the ball squashing the UConn attack.
UConn was actually able to get the ball in the goal during the 74th minute of play. Busque reeled around and kicked the ball past the goalie, but was apparently offsides according to the referee.
UConn was finally able to capitalize on their many opportunities at 86:22 when junior Annie Yi (Indianapolis, Ind.) sent a laser shot to the top of the goal past the reach of the Providence goalie. Yi was helped out by Busque on the goal.
UConn held on to their late lead for the rest of the game and defeated Providence for the 26th time in school history. The only team that UConn has beaten more times in history is Boston College.
The Huskies are back in action Sunday Sept. 21, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Fairfield in their first road match of September.
