STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut women’s soccer program announced on Wednesday that nine players will join the Huskies for the 2012 season. UConn will welcome three forwards, four midfielders, one defender and one goalie in 2012. The future Huskies will join Head Coach Len Tsantiris in his 32nd season, along with 19 returning players and nine starters.
Brianna Butler | Midfield/Forward | Rock Tavern, N.Y. | Washingtonville High School
Butler is 5-8 athlete that can play both midfield or forward for the Huskies coming out of Rock Tavern, N.Y. Butler played on Washingtonville’s varsity team from 2006-2011 assisting the squad to four division titles and three section titles. Butler proved her versatility on the field as she was named Most Valuable Defender in 2009, Most Valuable Midfielder in 2010 and Most Valuable Forward in 2011. She was captain her senior year and was named to the All-State Second Team and All-Section Team en route to leading the team to Section and Division Championships. Butler, who is in the top ten percent of her class and a member of the National Honor Society, earned Scholar All-American in 2011.
“Bri is one of the most competitive players I have seen in a while. She is a tremendously gifted natural athlete that can play anywhere on the field. Bri has the mentality and work ethic that we have been looking for and are confident that she will do very well at UConn.”
Monica Dahlgren | Goalkeeper | Danbury, Conn. | Wooster School
A 5-8 goalkeeper, the four-year starter was named New England All-Star and HVAL All-Star all four years. Dahlgren led her team to the 2011 HVAL Championship and 2010 Runner-up en route to being named the Female Athlete of the Year. After being part of the Disney College Showcase U16 Runner-up squad, State Cup Champions in 2008 and 2010, and PDA Champions espnhs.com named Dahlgren as a Top 20 Keeper in America and Top 20 player in Connecticut.
“Monica will compete for a starting position in goal. She has a positive attitude and great upside and we are looking forward to watch her develop over the next four years.”
Allison Gallo | Midfield | Tolland, Conn. | Tolland High School
The 5-4 midfielder comes to UConn after earning four letters for Tolland High School and being an All-Conference, All-State and All-Courant midfielder in 2009 and 2010. Captain of her team her senior year, she helped lead the team to two Conference Championships. Gallo also was four-year letterwinner in track and field and three-year letterwinner in basketball. Gallo is an honor roll student and was a Journal Inquirer All-Academic member in 2011.
“Alli is a great kid and will be a nice addition to our program. She is a speedy athlete who is smooth technically with good vision on the ball.”
Liana Hinds | Forward | Hartford, Conn. | Loomis Chaffee
Hinds comes to Storrs after earning All-State her junior and senior years, along with All-New England her senior campaign. The 5-6 forward was a captain her senior year and the team’s most valuable player. Her freshman and sophomore years, Hinds played for the Trinidad National Team as she scored goals against Chile and Nigeria during the 2010 U-17 Women’s World Cup.
“We are very excited to have Liana join our team. She is an attacking player who has experience on the international level. She has the ability to change a game single handedly and will be a great threat for us either as a forward or an attacking mid fielder.”
Krystina Jackson | Defender | Windsor, Conn. | Windsor High School
The 5-6 defender competed with CFC United Club team that won the Connecticut State Championship. Jackson was a member of the 3 vs. 3 State Championship team in 2007 and placed third in regional competition. She earned All-Conference honors in 2009 and 2011 as she was the leading scorer on her high school varsity team from the forward and central midfield positions. With a 3.65 GPA, Jackson is in the Top 15% of her class and earned the Academic Achievement Award in 2008, 2009 and 2011.
“She is an outstanding athlete and good defender with very good speed and ability to play accurate long balls.”
Samantha McGuire | Forward | Fishkill, N.Y. | John Jay High School
The Fishkill, N.Y. native is a 5-7 forward that led her high school team to two State Championships as she earned All-League and All-Section honors her four years at John Jay High School. McGuire earned numerous accolades throughout her high school career, including 2010 ESPN All-American, 2011 NSCAA All-American, 2008-11 All-League, 2008-11 Elks Club Player of the Year and the 2011 New York Sportswriters Co-Player of the Year. She was a team captain her senior year and led the team in scoring with 105 goals throughout her four years. McGuire also was earned the 2010 Exemplary Character and Citizenship Award.
“Sam is an explosive forward who is very good on the ball and has proven to be a prolific goal scorer. We are thrilled Sam is joining our team, she is a big time player and we will expect her to make an immediate impact up top.”
Stephanie Ribeiro | Forward | Pawtocket, R.I. | Cumberland High School
Ribeiro, a 5-7 forward, was a four-year letterwinner out of Pawtocket, Rhode Island where she earned team MVP honors her junior and senior seasons. A captain her senior year, Ribeiro was a three-time All-State selection and earned All-New England. She ended her high school career with 105 goals.
“Steph is a gifted soccer player who is very composed on the ball and outstanding with her back to goal. She is a forward by nature and will find ways to help us win games by either scoring herself or involving others.”
Brittany Silva | Midfield | Dracut, Mass. | Dracut Senior High School
Silva is a 5-5 midfielder who was a four-year letterwinner and two-time captain as she was named the MVC Division II Player of the Year award and earned Eastern Massachusetts First Team accolades in 2009 and 2011. Silva also competed in track and field for four years, was the captain her senior campaign and currently holds the school record in the 4x400 relay and 50m dash. She is a honor student and member of the National Honor Society and National Business Honor Society.
“Brittany is a hardnosed defender with good tactical awareness. She will add grit and depth to our back line.”
Miranda Tarpey | Midfield | Poughouag, N.Y. | Arlington High School
Tarpey is a 5-2 midfielder who competed with the Quickstrike FC and was a four-year letter winner for Arlington High School in LaGrangeville, N.Y. Tarpey helped the Quickstrike FC to two State Cup Championships and one SYL National Championship. At Arlington, Tarpey was a two time captain where she earned three All-League, two All-State and two All-Section accolades. Tarpey is also a member of the National Honor Society.
“Miranda is a little spark in the midfield. She is a very technical player who is a playmaker at heart and one of her best qualities is that she is a tireless worker. She will be a great addition to the center mid field position.”
