New York Power Defeats Women's Soccer

    April 12, 2001

Former University of Connecticut standouts, Sara Whalen and Kerry Connors, each scored a goal as the WUSA’s New York Power defeated the University of Connecticut women’s soccer team 2-0 in a friendly match in front of 1,052 fans at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, NY. Whalen was a three-time All-American, while Connors was donned twice with the honor while both playing for UConn.

On this cold, rainy April evening, Whalen scored the games first goal during the 25th minute of play on a breakaway. UConn keeper Maria Yatrakis (Brooklyn, NY) made four key saves in the first half keeping the game in close range. Connors added the insurance goal and sealed the Power victory with her tally during the 68th minute. The Connecticut defense came up big on several occasions, including holding National Team standout Tiffany Milbrett scoreless.

The Huskies also took on WUSA’s Boston Breakers on April 1 in Storrs. The Breakers defeated UConn, 2-1.

The Breakers scored seven minutes into the match as Kristine Lilly pounced on a loose ball just outside the box. Lilly struck the ball with her left foot and Yatrakis misplayed the shot as the Breakers went up, 1-0.

Boston controlled the half from the start as Dagny Mellgren missed wide off the opening kickoff. The Breakers out shot UConn, 6-1 in the half.

In the second half, the Breakers notched the second goal of the game at the 18-minute mark. Angela Hucles took a feed from Maren Meinert. Hucles was just outside the box, struck a ball that deflected off a UConn defender for the 2- 0 lead. Alexa Borisjuk (North Haven, CT) notched Connecticut’s only goal with a minute left to play in the match.
