STORRS, Conn. -- The Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes at the University of Connecticut held its annual awards dinner on Thursday, April 12, at the Rome Ballroom on the Storrs campus. The event is held annually to recognize UConn's top student-athletes and is a celebration of National Student-Athlete Day.
The highest honor of the evening is the Donald Kinsman Awards, named after the former CPIA Director. They are presented annually to those student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement during their time at UConn.
Aserlind excelled for UConn in the backstroke and the mid-distance freestyle as she competed at the BIG EAST Championship in each of her four years. She was a team captain her senior year and served as one of the team’s study group leaders. During UConn’s 2011 spring break, she and her mother Cathy volunteered to go to Haiti to provide medical assistance to the victims of the sunami.
Aserlind is a sociology major who plans on attending medical school.
Filipek has been a four-year member of the rowing team and was the stroke of the varsity eight boat that finished third at the Head of the Charles this past fall. As a freshman, she was the stroke of the novice eight that was third at the Dad Vail Regatta. She is a Dean’s List student who is a member of the Alpha Lamda Delta honor society and is a three-time member of the BIG EAST Academic Honor Roll. Filipek is an active member of the community through her involvement in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Athlete-In-Action. She also serves as a tutor for the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes.
Filipek is a nursing major. In addition to the Kinsman Awards, a top student-athlete from all 24 of UConn's athletic teams were honored.
They were: junior Nick Aguila (West Hartford, Conn.) of men’s cross country, who is a exercise science major; senior Jestine Angelini (Boiling Springs, Pa.) of the field hockey team, who is a communications disorders major; senior Nikardo Blake (Clarendon, Jamaica) of men’s soccer, a sociology major; senior Jeb Buchanan (Loudonville, N.Y.) of golf, who is a finance major; junior Heather Buck (Stonington, Conn.) of women’s basketball, who is a nursing major; senior Samantha Cisneros (Garden Grove, Calif.) of women’s swimming and diving, who is a allied health sciences major; senior Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) of the softball team, who a sociology and communications sciences major; senior Courtney Dinnan (Hamden, Conn.) of women’s track and field, who is a human development and family studies major; senior Jessica Dulski (Pittsford, N.Y.) of the women’s soccer team, who is a human development and family studies major.
Also: senior Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) of women’s tennis, a sociology and communications science major; senior Rebecca Hewett (Oak Bluff, Man.) of women’s ice hockey, a civil engineering major; senior Mark Hinkley (Koneohe, Hawaii) of football, an economics major; senior Corey Jendras (Abingdon, Md.) of men’s ice hockey, a communications sciences major; senior Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) of volleyball, who is a finance major; senior Meghan Lally (Westwood, Mass.) of women’s lacrosse, who is a biological sciences major; senior Nick Majtenyi (St. Catherines, Ont.) of men’s swimming and diving, who is a physics major; junior Corey Manning (Tyrone, Ga.) of football, a finance major; sophomore Tyler Olander (Mansfield, Conn.) of men’s basketball, a political science major; senior Kyle Rowbotham (Scotch Plains, N.J.) of men’s track and field, who is a mechanical engineering major; senior John Sulzicki (Statford) of baseball, who is a economics major; senior Sara Trevisani (Duxbury, Mass.) of rowing, a physiology and neurobiology major; Stephanie Walker, a student tutor in CPIA, who is a geography and political science major; senior Scott Warden of men’s tennis (Boardman, Ohio), who is a finance major; senior Heather Wilson (Homer, N.Y.) of women’s cross country, who is an exercise science major.
