STORRS, CTUniversity of Connecticut womens soccer team member Casey Zimny (Rochester, NY) has been named to the U.S. Under-21 Womens National Team Nordic Cup roster, announced by head coach Jerry Smith over the weekend. Zimny and the U-21 team arrived in Oslo, Norway on Saturday and will open the tournament against Iceland on Wednesday, July 25.
A 2001 Preseason BIG EAST First Team and Co-Defensive Player of the Year selection, Zimny will anchor the Husky defensive line this season as a senior. Having started and played in all 26 games last season, Zimny and the defense held opponents to 0.8 goals and 7.7 shots per game and shut out the opposition 14 times. She was named an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection and a NSCAA/adidas All-Region Second Team member.
After opening the tournament against Iceland, the U-21 team will battle Denmark on July 27 and finish first-round play against Germany on July 29. The USA will then play a placement match on July 31 against an opponent from the tournaments other group. Canada, Finland, Sweden and Norway make up the second group, and the team with the best record in each group will play for the championship.
The annual Nordic Cup Tournament serves as the top competition in the world for the U-21 women. The USA has won three of the last four Nordic Cup tournaments, last year winning 1-0 in a classic final against Germany in Germany. This will be Coach Smiths first Nordic Cup at the helm of the U-21 team after taking over for Jillian Ellis last March.
