PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The UConn women's soccer team was picked fifth in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Poll, which was released on Tuesday.
UConn, which won the American regular season and tournament title last year, received 56 points in the poll behind preseason favorite Memphis (75 with five first place vote), SMU (65 with three), Cincinnati (60 with one) and USF (57 with one).
Last week, UConn was ranked 14th in the country in the United Soccer Coaches Association preseason poll.
UConn reached the NCAA Tournament for the third-consecutive season and finished 2016 No. 20 in the final NSCAA poll of the year with a 19-3-1 overall record.
The Huskies return 17 players that saw the field in 2016 and bring in a solid group of newcomers and transfers to the 2017 squad.
The Huskies did not have any players named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
UConn opened preseason camp last Thursday and play a pair of exhibition games this weekend at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs. The Huskies play host to Boston College on Friday night at 7 p.m. and then take on the Boston Breakers Reserves on Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission to both of those games is free.
The regular season begins on Monday, August 21 at Syracuse at 6 p.m. with the home opener on Friday, August 25 vs. Yale at 3:00 p.m. Season and single game tickets are on sale for the nine-game regular season home slate for the Huskies.
