Aug. 11, 2015

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women’s soccer team was voted as the favorite in the 2015 American Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll, earning a total of 76 points. The reigning AAC champions were awarded four first-place votes from the leagues 10 head coaches. Junior forward Rachel Hill (Rollinsford, N.H.) was also unanimously chosen as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

UConn captured its first American Athletic Conference championship last season after upsetting top-seeded UCF in the conference semifinals and then pulling out a 3-2 victory in penalty kicks over USF to win the tournament. The Huskies then made their 29th NCAA tournament appearance, where they fell to Penn State 1-0 in the second round. With a 14-5-5 record, the team is receiving votes (33 points) in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason coaches’ poll, which was announced last week.

UCF finished second in the poll with 74 points and six first-place votes. The Knights are currently ranked 17 in the 2015 NSCAA preseason rankings. USF completes the podium at third with 64 points and are also receiving votes in the NSCAA preseason poll.

Rachel Hill received preseason accolades for the second consecutive season. She was voted Preseason Co-Offensive Player of the Year in 2014 along with Lena Petermann, a sophomore from UCF. Hill led the team in points last season with 16 goals and three assists for a total 35 points, which earned her the unanimous Preseason Offensive Player of the Year for the upcoming 2015 season.

The Huskies take on the University of Montreal Friday, Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. at Morrone Stadium in their second exhibition match in preparation for the regular season home opener, which is set to kick off Aug. 21 against the Colgate Raiders.
