Women's Soccer Selected to Finish Fourth in American Athletic Conference Preseason Poll

STORRS, Conn.  – The University of Connecticut women’s soccer team was selected to finish fourth in the inaugural American Athletic Conference preseason poll as announced by the conference office on Friday afternoon. The Huskies earned 61 points in polling conducted by the league’s head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own team or their own players.

The Huskies finished the 2012 season with a 9-8-2 overall record and 4-5-1 mark in the Big East. The 2012 campaign featured head coach Len Tsantiris earning his 500th career victory and UConn’s return to the Big East Tournament. Connecticut returns 18 Huskies, including seven starters, from its 2012 team, while welcoming nine newcomers.

UCF and Louisville tied for first place in the women’s soccer preseason poll as the Knights and the Cardinals each earned 85 points, while Rutgers finished third with 67 points. UCF’s Marissa Diggs and Lianne Maldonado were voted the Preseason Defensive Player and Goalkeeper of the Year, respectively. Rutgers’ Jonelle Filigno was chosen as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

UConn opens the 2013 season with an exhibition against UMass on Saturday, August 16 at 7 p.m. at Joseph J. Morrone stadium in Storrs.  Admission to Saturday’s contest is free. The Huskies kick off the regular season next weekend when the team welcomes Wisconsin on Friday, August 23 at 7 p.m. and Stanford on Sunday, August 25 at 1 p.m.
