STORRS, Conn. - Connecticut women's soccer is set to host its season opener at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium on Friday, August 19, against Northeastern at 7 p.m.
The Huskies start the regular season after winning both exhibition games last week in solid form.
The first exhibition win, 3-2, came at home against UMass on August 11. The victory featured redshirt junior Danielle Schulmann (Saddle River, N.J.) who netted two headers and led the team with four points. Graduate student Cory Bildstein added the third Husky goal of the game.
UConn went on to win its final exhibition game with a 2-1 victory over Boston College. The historic matchup between the two teams goes back to 1980 with a 27-7-3 overall record. Prior to Sunday's win over the Eagles, the seven seniors on the team were yet to see a victory over Boston College.
Schulmann continued to stay aggressive against the Eagles and put the ball in the back of the net on a cross from freshman midfielder Riley Houle (Columbia, Conn.). The Huskies game winning goal came from redshirt junior midfielder Karen Gurnon (Tolland, Conn.) as she rebounded a crossbar shot from teammate Devin Prendergast.
The Huskies saw considerable playing time from their 11 newcomers with five earning starting roles against the Minutewomen. Junior transfer Julie Hubbard (Waverly, Penn.) made a large impact for the Huskies with three shots on goal and an assist against UMass.
The visiting Huskies of Northeastern come into Friday's game with a 1-1 tie against Providence in its lone exhibition game. The Huskies welcome back 18 players from the 2010 team that went 9-8-1 and did not make the CAA Tournament.
Friday's contest begins at 7 p.m. and will be broadcasted live on WHUS at WHUS.org or locally on 91.7 FM. For ticket information visit UConnhuskies.com/tickets or call 1-877-AT-UCONN (1-877-288-2666).
