STORRS, Conn. -- The UConn women's soccer team will open its 2015 regular season schedule Friday Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. against the Colgate Raiders at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
The Huskies finished 14-5-5 last season with a conference record of 4-2-3, which left them fourth in the AAC. After upsetting top seed UCF in the American Conference semifinals, UConn earned the American Athletic Conference Championship title after defeating USF in penalty kicks. The team made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament, which marked its 29th NCAA tournament appearance.
UConn returns three of its four leading scorers including junior Rachel Hill (16g, 3a), sophomore Danielle Gottwik (6g, 4a), and senior Samantha McGuire (6g, 3a). Hill (Rollinsford, N.H.) and McGuire (Fishkill, N.Y.) were two of the four Huskies who received NSCAA All-Region Honors last season. Hill was named First Team with senior Riley Houle (Columbia, Conn.), and McGuire was selected to Third Team. Senior Gabrielle Charno (Seaford, N.Y.) was the fourth team member to receive All-Region Honors.
Colgate finished with an overall record of 14-3-2, and a Patriot League record of 7-1-1. The Raiders pushed past Bucknell with a 2-1 victory in the conference tournament semi-finals to advance to the Patriot League Championship where they fell short in a 2-1 loss to Boston University.
The Raiders return two of their three top scorers, junior forward Sarah Coy (Boca Raton, Fla.) who finished last season with 18 points (8g, 2a) and senior forward Catherine Williams (Buffalo, N.Y.), who finished last year with 11 points (4g, 3a).
Connecticut is undefeated 8-0-0 in the series against Colgate. The last time the two met was in 2011 where the Huskies shut out the Raiders 3-0 at Jospeh J. Morrone Stadium.
