This weekend’s game notes:
Huskies Last Outing
The Huskies blanked intrastate rival Central Connecticut on Sunday with a final score of 3-0. UConn improved to 2-2 in the Morrone win and is now 1-2 when playing in Storrs. Connecticut’s offensive leaders Rachel Hill and Riley Houle, each with five points apiece, both scored against the Blue Devils and keeper Emily Armstrong notched her second consecutive shutout.
Abundance of Weekly Honors
Following Connecticut’s 2-0 week the squad saw three Huskies honored for their stellar performances. Rachel Hill was named the American Athletic Conference’s Rookie of the Week and the New England Soccer News Women's College Player of the Week after registering consecutive game-winning goals. Junior Gabby Charno earned her first conference weekly accolade as she was tabbed The American’s Defensive Player of the Week following her first career assist and anchoring the defense in back-to-back shutouts. Finally, goalkeeper Emily Armstrong landed on The American honor roll after eight saves and allowing no goals.
Connecticut & Maine – The Series
Connecticut and Maine have only played two times in program history. The Huskies are yet to lose to the Black Bears and hold a 1-0-1 all-time mark. UConn blanked Maine, 3-0, in 2012 at Morrone Stadium behind goals from then-freshmen Sam McGuire, Andrea Plucenik and Stephanie Ribeiro.
Huskies Against The Orange
Former conference opponents, UConn and Syracuse have faced each other 18 times with Connecticut owning a dominating 17-1 all-time record. The Orange snapped the Huskies perfect record in 2012 when Syracuse defeated UConn 3-2 in New York. The thrilling contest was determined as time ticked away when Syracuse’s Jackie Firenze split two Husky defenders and score with 30 seconds remaining in the tied match.
More More Morrone!
The 2013 schedule features 19 games with the Huskies hosting 13 at Morrone, the most home games in program history since 1987.
