STORRS, Conn. - In the first day of the UConn Soccer Classic, the University of Connecticut women's soccer team defeated UMass, 4-0.  Freshmen dominated the day for the Huskies as Brittany Taylor (Campbell Hall, N.Y.), Brittany Tegeler (Baldwin, M.D.), Elizabeth Eng (Chicago, Ill.) and Stephanie Labbe (Stony Plain, Alberta) each had a hand in team's scoring.

UConn's Taylor scored the first goal of the game at the 42:14 mark of the first half.  Sophomore Karyn Riviere (Guilford, Conn.) assisted on the play as Taylor advanced toward the goal on a drive to the left side.  This was just one of 10 shots the Huskies took in the first half.  UMass tallied only one shot throughout the entire game, and it was taken by Britt Canfield at the 15:53 mark.

Three minutes and 36 seconds into the second half, sophomore Alexandra Zedros (Melrose, Mass.) accepted a pass from Eng in front of the goal, found the left side of the net, barely grazing the post, and scored her first collegiate goal.  This put the Huskies up, 2-0.

UConn's third goal of the evening was scored by junior Niki Cross (Pembroke, Mass.) off an assist from senior Karlyn Miselis (Glastonbury, Conn.).  Cross faced UMass goalie Kristen Walker one-on-one, faked to her left, went right, and scored on the open net left by Walker.

The Huskies' final goal was scored at the 74:39 mark of the game by Tegeler with an assist from the goalkeeper, Labbe.  Labbe threw the ball down the field, finding Tegeler open in the offensive third.  Tegeler had a breakaway and found the back of the net to give the Huskies a final score of 4-0.

The Huskies finished the game with 16 shots, 11 of which were on goal.  Senior goaltender, Megan Jessee (Orefield, Pa,) made the lone save for UConn in the first half of the game.

In earlier action, St. John's took on Colgate in the first game of the UConn Soccer Classic.  Colgate recorded a 4-1 victory over the Redstorm.

All four teams will be back on the field on Sunday, Sept. 11 for the final round of the UConn Soccer Classic.  St. John's and UMass will square-off at 11:30 a.m. and the rematch of the second round of the 2004 NCAA tournament between UConn and Colgate will begin at 2:00 p.m.  On Sunday, the Huskies will be hosting a pre-game Soccerfest with inflatables, face-painting, giveaways and much more starting at noon.
