STORRS, Conn. (September 14, 2007) - The 23rd ranked University of Connecticut women's soccer team had its best offensive night of the season in a 5-1 win over Brown in the second game of the UConn Classic. Senior defender Karyn Riviere (Guilford, Conn.) scored two goals for the Huskies who improve to 3-2-0 on the season. Brown falls to 0-3-0.
UConn scored only 1:46 into the game when senior midfielder Meghan Schnur (Butler, Pa.) saved the ball just as it was about to go out of bounds and passed it to a wide open Annie Yi (Indianapolis, In.) in front of the box. Yi then one timed a shot into the back of the goal to give the Huskies the quick 1-0 lead. Connecticut then made it 2-0 only eight minutes later when Riviere caught a pass from Erin Clark (Somers, Conn.) and hit the top right corner of net.
Brittany Taylor (Campbell Hall, N.Y) added to UConn's lead in the 21st minute. After Schnur's corner kick was rebounded right back to her, Schnur then passed the ball to a wide open Taylor who then deposited it in the left side of the goal. UConn ended the half leading 3-0 on a 8-3 shot advantage.
Brown tried to get back in the game three minutes into the second half when Kate Ashforth got an open look at the goal, but Husky goalie Stephanie Labbe (Stony Plain, Alberta) was in position to make one of her three saves on the night. Connecticut then gained the momentum right back with a goal in the 52nd minute as sophomore defender Lauren Ebert (Hillsborough, N.J.) sent a cross that ended up sneaking in the right corner of the net.
UConn added one more goal in the 62nd minute when Riviere scored her second of the night. After she controlled the Bear goalies clearing attempt, she sent the ball back towards the goal from 25 yards out, it hopped over the goalie and in. Brown then scored their own tally 22 seconds later as Kiki Manners scored off a Husky turnover to make it 5-1 and conclude the scoring for the night.
