PROVIDENCE – UConn women’s soccer freshman Danielle Gottwik (New Port Richey, Fla.) was named The American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, the league announced on Monday (Sept. 15). In addition, sophomore standout Rachel Hill (Rollinsford, N.H.) earned her fourth-consecutive weekly honor roll nod from the conference.
Gottwik’s award comes after she scored two goals dished out two assists in UConn’s 2-0-0 week. In the 4-1 win over St. John’s on Friday, Gottwik swung in a corner kick that Hill headed for the first goal of the game for UConn. Against UMass on Sunday, she scored the first goal of a 5-0 win by converting a 25-yard free kick. In the second half, she assisted on another Hill goal before burying a long shot for her first career multi-goal game. Overall in 2014, Gottwik is second on the squad with a 3-2-8 scoring line.
For Hill, the honor roll nod comes after a seven-point weekend for the sophomore starlet. Hill scored twice against St. John’s, with the aforementioned header goal preceding a 30-yard strike that sailed over the keeper’s head. She then connected with Gottwik twice against UMass, scoring off a through-ball from the freshman before sending in a cross to the rookie that led to her second goal. Hill leads UConn and is among the national leaders with nine goals and 19 points through eight games this season.
Gottwik, Hill and the Huskies return to the action for a huge showdown with No. 5 Florida State on Thursday night. Kick-off from Joseph J. Morrone Stadium is set for 7 p.m., with the match airing live on NSCAATV.com.
