Huskies Fall At Villanova, 1-0, In Women’s Soccer Action



    VILLANOVA, Pa. (September 29, 2006) — Villanova’s Nikki Mabery’s goal in the second minute was the only goal of the game as the Wildcats defeated the University of Connecticut, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Villanova Soccer Stadium. 

    With the win, Villanova improves to 11-0-1, 3-0-1 in the BIG EAST while the Huskies fall to 5-6-1, 2-2-0 in the league.  Despite the loss, UConn owns an impressive 5-1-0 all-time record against the Wildcats at Villanova, limiting the Wildcats to only two goals. 

    Mabery tallied her 11th goal of the season off a free kick following a UConn foul on its own end of the field.  Mabery beat Husky keeper Stephanie Labbe (Stony Plain, Alberta) with a direct strike from approximately 22 yards out. 

    Following the goal at the 1:18 mark, the UConn defense allowed the Wildcat offense just two more shots on goal for the remainder of the contest.

    The Huskies outshot Villanova in both halves, holding a 5-4 edge after the first stanza and ending the game with a 12-9 advantage.  UConn managed six shots on goal for the game, but Villanova keeper Jillian Loyden tallied six saves to record the shutout.

    Sophomore Elizabeth Eng (Chicago, Ill.) led the Huskies’ offensive attack with three shots.  Hermann Award candidate Niki Cross (Pembroke, Mass.) paced UConn with two shots on goal. 

    UConn returns to the pitch Sunday afternoon when the Huskies head south to take on Georgetown at 1:00 p.m.  Connecticut is 8-0 all-time against the Hoyas and have outscored them by a 43-2 tally.
