SYRACUSE, N.Y. (October 7, 2005) - Even in inclement weather, the University of Connecticut women's soccer team manages to prevail, extending its streak to eight straight games without a loss with a 3-0 victory over Syracuse. Freshmen Brittany Taylor (Campbell Hall, N.Y.), and Brittany Tegeler (Baldwin, M.D.) and redshirt sophomore Meghan Schnur (Butler, Pa.) each scored in the Huskies' shutout over their BIG EAST rival.
Connecticut scored all three of its goals in the first half, and all within the first 12 minutes of the game. Taylor put the Huskies on the board at the 5:42 mark by lofting a shot that barely crept into the top of the goal to take the lead, 1-0.
Just 26 seconds later, Schnur increased the lead to 2-0 with a line drive shot from in front of the goal the blew past Syracuse's goalkeeper, Emily Kowalczyk.
The Huskies continued to attack the Orange's defense, peppering a total of seven shots in the first period. They increased their lead to 3-0 at the 11:11 mark with the final goal of the game by Tegeler. The freshman forward accepted a pass from fellow classmate, Elizabeth Eng (Chicago, Ill.), faked out an Orange defenseman, and fired the ball into the goal.
Syracuse had a scoring opportunity in the second half when Kaitlin LaMothe took a shot on freshman goalie, Stephanie Labbe (Stony Plain, Alberta), but Labbe made the save help record the Huskies' sixth shutout of the season.
UConn improves to 10-2-1 overall and 6-0-0 in the BIG EAST. Syracuse drops to 3-7-4 overall and 2-1-3 in the BIG EAST. The Huskies will be in action again on Sunday, Oct. 9 at St. John's at 1:00 p.m.
